I was given an IBM C-It webcam, it has no drivers in Linux. Then I was given a Kodak DVC-323 webcam. No drivers in Linux.
I went searching for some webcam known to work in Linux. Not easy to find, and then I realized, Ubuntu need not only a 'hardware compatibility list' but a 'recommended' list. Those on the recommended list will be mfgs. that help with Linux drivers. This leads to some marketing power for both manufacturer and user.
