Ubuntu 8.10 desktop size

Hi,

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an oldie laptop (Compaq Armada 700MHz/312MB/10GB). It refuses to use the full screen size 1024x768, but runs only under 800x600 pixels, leaving about an inch of screen on each side unused. The same machine used to run XP and Xubuntu without any problems so far.

How could I get back to full screen mode again? Any video drivers to be installed? Any helpful hint is highly appeciated!

Meanwhile I have tried the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg under Failsafe Terminal, but this ends with security warning and prevents the terminal task from further running. I am logged in as a root user.

Any ideas, suggestions? Thx in advance :)
