the following was the output while installing vlc in my hardy system(sudo apt-get install vlc)via terminal



abhinav@raphtor:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc

E: Couldn't find package vlc




what should i do?

Have you tried installing VLC via synaptic?

Post the output of the following to check your sources:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list

no actually it was showing many dependency errors when i tried to install using synaptic.so i thought its best to install via terminal..

Looks like we need to see the sources.list listing then, as suggested by mikewhatever.

Can you post your sources list as in post 3? It's most likely that you don't have medibuntu installed though

Run this command in a terminal and post the output here:

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install vlc

yeah its installed.but can u tell me why sudo apt-get install was not working?

I'm guessing your source list wasn't updated or something (as I believe that's what that command does).
