Hi, I'm a noob. My problem is that I am not able to download any application that I want neither through the package manager nor the synaptic package manager and also I can't update the ubuntu. I think that this have something to do with my internet connection, but the strange thing is that I can surf with the firefox. FYI, I'm currently living in a university's hall of residence (does this have something to do with the problem?). Please help guys.

If you use a proxy to connect, make sure you have synaptic (System>Admin>Synaptic Package Manager) setup correctly for a proxy. You can configure the proxy in synaptic by going to Settings>Pref>Network.
