What do you think is the best looking distro when you first start it up? (That means absolutely no changes)

I'm thinking Linux mint here, it's simple, elegant, and not in-your-face.

opensuse!

I'm a Ubuntu/Kubuntu user though

Yeah it is nice but there seems to be a widespread phobia against E17.

I guess I wouldn't get too many votes for my pure black openbox setup without panels.

Not a distro, but I would have to go with Vista. The theme was one of the few improvements they actually made over xp. The New Wave theme for Ubuntu is real nice for me though.

Kubuntu 8.10 but after a few minor tweaks, Ubuntu can look pretty sweet :)

I would say Mint but Kubuntu 8.10 is pretty slick too.

none of them :)
I always found myself removing and installing *a lot* of packages after a fresh install regardless the distro.

configuration wise though ubuntu is pretty much painless out of the box.

Kubuntu 8.10 The Black/Dark Blue default look is nice. But I can see how some people don't like dark themes.

Not too keen on ubuntu brown or the opensuse green.:-k

my question is why?

i love e17, the eye candy is amazing

supports animated wallpapers and icons

supports awesome looking drop shadows

supports flashy animations with the window borders

its very easy to use and configure

(basically if you like eye candy and making things look good, i think you should definatly give elive a try at least once)

OzOS

ozos is also an e17 distro, and i have to agree that is great

I would say Arch Linux, because it doesn't really have a "default look", so you can make it look however you want. ;)

1.PclinuxOS 2009 (even though it is still a beta)

2. OpenSuse 11

3. Linux Mint 6

These all by default have a great look and are also really simple to use at the same time =].

I do think OpenSolaris has the best default Gnome implementation out there.

For minimal and light Distro? I like PuppyLinux, especially the derivatives called Puplets (some have great graphics). Although DSLinux is lighter, I don't like the environment.

For great looks but heavier? I tried PCLinuxOS and liked it, but I really liked this Vixtra3D. I think it's a Brazilian Distro derived from Ubuntu (not so sure about that).

open-solaris.
then i like the debian etch default looks very much. i almost never change the wall papers for at least a couple of month when i install etch.
i also happen to like intrepid ibex default theme. i was happy with hardys but ibex is a bit nicer i think. i happen to like both gnome and brown.

there is other nice looking linux distros such as dreamlinux and macpuppy. reactOS looks nice also but the ubuntu ultimate edition has the nicest mouse curso theme i seen.

I'm really surprised more people haven't mentioned Fedora. I think it's one of the most polished distros out there. From the artwork to technologies like Plymouth, Fedora looks really good ;)

Elive, of course. :D How could anything look better than a distro running E17?

The first versions of Sabayon were also very pretty, quite a trick considering it uses KDE, but I don't like the latest incarnations that much.

Vista or Not, that is one of the best themes I have seen for KDE. Clean, elegant, and not too bloated with nice transparency, windows need work tho.

Arch, so simple, soothing, and lets you customize it to loko like anything else. If you want to make it look like Gnome, KDE, Xfce, Openbox, or whatever, go 'head, it doesn't choose for you. To me, this looks like what I want out of the box from a distro, so it technically counts.

Holy crud! I've been looking for a simple distro that is really basic! Looks like that hits it! Thanks!

Yeah...virtually all distros will let you do that. I know you Arch people are proud of yourselves, but no sensible person would say Arch looks better out of the box than a distro that gives you a default desktop.

RichardLinx
February 25th, 2009, 03:05 AM
Besides, INX looks much nicer out of the box compared to Arch.

Oh come off it. Seriously, Arch isn't THAT good! And saying its best looking out of the box is RIDICULOUS. Seriously, that's like saying that ubuntu looks better out of the box then windows 7. Nobody but the largest fanboy is going to agree. [/archuserrant]

I notice that a lot of people thing many different distros are great out of the box.. which was pretty unexpected for me, I though that many people would just think one is the best. Keep em comming :)

I have always been very impressed with Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop offerings, they always seem to be able to shake together all the little pieces that is the Linux desktop and make it look slick, professional and consistent.

OpenSuSE (Gnome, KDE 3.5 & KDE 4). Fedora 10 Gnome edition.
