i just downloaded the update from the pidgin site but it was files can anybody help me

You can almost always find the newest Pidgin at http://www.getdeb.net. It comes in the form of .deb file, you will need all 4 files. Remove the old Pidgin, and install the new one.

If you are using hardy download and install hardy otherwise intrepid of course
