Hi,

I know this is probably a common problem.... but....

- I installed Vista on my Ubuntu 8.04 laptop.
- Vista installed great and booted great.
- Now when I when back to install grub to do the dual boot thing, I did....
- Boot live cd.
- got a terminal, and typed sudo grub
- then typed find /boot/grub/stage1 which returned (hd0,1)
- then I typed root (hd0,1) and got no error messages.
- then I typed setup (hd0) and got.....
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists....yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"..... 16 sectors are embedded succeded
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,1)/boot/grub/stage2
/boot/grub/menu.list" ..... succeded
Done.

- Then I rebooted took the live CD out and got the following boot error message.
Failed to read splash image ((hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz)
Press any key to continue...

- Then I pressed a key to continue

- Then I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"

Question.....

What did I do wrong? How do I get grub to see the correct partion?

Thanks George

Hi,

Thanks for responding!

By typing the following.....
sudo mkdir /mnt/tst
sudo mount - t ext3 /dev/sda2 /mnt/tmp
cat /mnt/tmp/boot/grub/menu.lst
blkid

Did you mean .......
sudo mkdir /mnt/tst
sudo mount - t ext3 /dev/sda2 /mnt/tst
cat /mnt/tst/boot/grub/menu.lst
blkid

blkid didn't produce any output.......

begin cut and paste from the cat .....------------

Ahhh..... I think I see it now! I need to change the all occurances of (hd0,2) to (hd0,1). I deleted a partition in order to get vista to install.

Cool - ok one you've booted you need to change one other thing you mightn't be aware of

## default grub root device
## e.g. groot=(hd0,0)
# groot=(hd0,2)

Change that to (hd0,1) - lines with # aren't commented out in grub but are used.

I've changed to error :)
