After my 4 year old dual core computer died, i had to use my girlfriends pc (1800 athlon xp :( too slow to do any real multitasking ) until i got enough money to build a new one. well, i have the money now, so here it is:

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128376&Tpk=GIGABYTE%20GA-MA770-UD3)
AMD Phenom 9950 Agena 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103291)
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227298)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262&Tpk=seagate%20Barracuda%207200.10%20ST3250410AS)

already have:
Lite-On DVD-RW/CD-RW
Nvidia Geforce 7300GS Video Card (will be upgraded eventually)
Hauppauge PVR150 TV Tuner
Nice black tower with side window and black lights.

Total cost: $330 (not bad, if you ask me) and yes, i know intel makes a "faster" processor, but amd is great bang for the buck. plus, i've always used amd.

ordering today, and should recieve by monday. can't wait!

That's a great system for a cheap price. I was going to ask you if you're going with 64 bit ubuntu. But I remember you find not much of a difference between the two. Anyway, it's great you're going amd. I have a fear that amd will go out of business and intel will have a monopoly. Which would mean much higher processor prices.

In my opinion you should buy a Phenom II. It's faster, uses less power and has a 'II' in the name 8)

I'll think about it if it's not much more money.

Edit: the phenom II uses the same amount of power and is 45$ more, and only 200mhz faster. not worth it in my opinion.

I was going to ask you if you're going with 64 bit ubuntu.

I plan on dual booting 32 & 64 bit ubuntu on the same drive to see if there is any noticable difference. if not, i'll wipe the 64bit partition. but i will give it a fair shake.

An AMD Phenom™ X4 Quad 9850 is €169 and an AMD Phenom™ II X4 920 is €189 here in the Netherlands.

And maybe you should consider an ATi/AMD card? They have released their documentation and the open-source drivers in Jaunty are already pretty good.

nice setup but since your going with 4gb of ram wouldnt 32bit be a waste ?

I'll wait for the reviews after jaunty is released.

i mentioned above that i will be dual booting 32 and 64 bit for a while. plus, i plan on doing some serious VM stuff, and much multitasking.
