When I connect my Ubuntu to the windows network at work I get a phone call from the network admin telling me my ubuntu is slowing down the LAN and the internet because it is always connecting to thing on the web. What is going on here?

;)
'Something', that is. I don't know anything about networks but I can't believe that my laptop is causing these problems because it's Linux and not Windows.

your ubuntu machine checks for updates when you login, that should take about 2 minutes max. unless you're running a bittorrent. other than that, your network admin is just making stuff up

Try to find out from your admin exactly what 'something' is. That should give you an idea where to start looking for a solution.
Also make sure you have the correct network settings for the network at your office. The network admin should be able to supply you with these.
