I have a faulty power cord and currently cant afford to replace it. So every once in a while it switches to battery with out me knowing because the planets lose alignment and the power cord loses connection. Well my screen use to dim to let me know when this happened but now it doesn't and I don't get any warning messages, it just suddenly dies. Does anyone know of a program that will let me give me a message when it is almost dead and also dim the screen when its in battery mode?

You can change your power management settings to dim the screen.

I believe in gnome it's system > administration > power management

Its system > preferences > power management and all I get is a On AC tab and a General tab but nothing to change my battery settings.

I have the same problem (though my power chord isn't faulty).

What's your laptop model?

I've been searching for a fix for the past few weeks, but found nothing.

In my case (ASUS PRO50GL), apparently a fix may become available in 4/6 months.
