I am trying to setup my Dell 2407 digital screen with an NVIDIA 8800 GTX card. its taken me two days nearly now and im nowhere further....can anyone help?

I have downloaded and isntalled the latest nvidia 180.29 driver for linux X64. I cannot get further than the 'Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode' and when i set my screen up through that and click either test or continue the display just goes blank and i have to do a hard reboot.

I have seen the XF86Config folder mentioned a few times which is supposed to be in my X11 directory but i havent got one of those there? do i need that there to configure it properly? and how do i go about getting that installed in X11?
thanks.
