I am currently operating Windows XP Professional on my Dell Dimension 8300 Series, and I am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10. I downloaded ubuntu and CD-ified it following all the instructions and ****. I proceeded with the "install inside Windows" option. I followed the instructions and rebooted with the CD in the tray. I booted into ubuntu and things were going well. Things seemed to be moving along, then I got stalled here:

There was no activity in the CD tray, so I tried popping out the CD and seeing if I was prompted to put it back in, but nothing happened. I put it back in anyway, and still nothing happened. I rebooted, and the same thing happened. So, I booted into Windows and cleared up some more HDD space (I only had 8G) by deleting some large photo files and running defrag. I restarted and booted back into ubuntu with the same issue. What am I doing wrong?

FYI, I am the biggest noob of all the noobs, so keep that in mind.

Suggestions:
Try running ubuntu on the machine by using the live cd first to verify the hardware will work

Read through install guide for dual boot

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed _first.htm

For the install, give the alternate cd a try if the live cd does not work

http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/

always easier to install windows first, then ubuntu when setting up dual boot.
