I have been using Xubuntu 6.06LTS for a while now, but I see that support for it will end this summer. I want to upgrade to the latest LTS release sometime this spring. Will there be a new LTS release after 8.04LTS, or should I upgrade to 8.04LTS? Is there a way to upgrade directly to the next LTS release, or do I have to go in steps, e.g., to 6.10, then 7.04, etc.?

You should upgrade straight from 6.06 to 8.04 in one step. The next LTS won't be until 2010.

I take it I should use the alternate install CD to do this?

Assuming you have an internet connection, you can use the Update Manager or the command line.

There are also instructions for using the Alternate CD lower down on that page, but I haven't personally tried that method. :)

I upgraded a few of my servers from 6.06 to 8.04 directly. It actually went a bit smoother than my 7.10 => 8.04 desktop upgrades. Of course some of that complication was due to it being a desktop machine rather than a server. (the latter having far less software installed).
