View Full Version : [ubuntu] advice on mpg creation
February 10th, 2009, 11:48 PM
Here's my problem, I have bought a 17in digital photo frame that I want to use behind my bar for advertising. The frame will slideshow photo's & mpg movies in a loop, but always plays the movie files first. I want to create a mpg format movie clip of around 30mins containing a selection of pics and movies in an order I want. So what I am looking for from you guys is advice on the best apps to use. I have had look about some of the DVD creators, but before I spend too much time getting to know each of their features and plus points I thought I might save some time reading on others experience.
Additional info :-
It would be helpfull if the app could work from .flv files downloaded from youtube to save a converstion.
Ability to add transition effects between pics
Be able to set screen time for pics
Thanx to all who contribute.

Have you tried f-spot or gthumb to edit photos?

Might not be clear, I dont want to edit the pics, I want to create a video format slideshow to insert into DeVeDe and make a list of output files.
I guess any video format would do, not tried them all with DeVeDe yet, at the moment I am trying to get smile to install and run, but having some probs, so any other suggestions welcome.

Look for a video editor that can import pictures and video clips at the same time. The ones I know that can do this is Blender VSE, kdenlive and cinelerra. If video editing is new for you try kdenlive first. Render the result : that gives you 1 videofile with pictures and clips.

is blender vse the same as blender in the repo's ???

Yes. Blender VSE is the Video Sequence Editor of blender. Once you open blender you have to push 3 x control arrow right to come into the VSE. From there you can follow this tutorial (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Using_VSE). This tutorial (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/VSE_Examples) explains how to import pictures.
The wiki is for blender 2.43 but it is applicable for 2.45 and 2.46 as well.
If the pictures (mixed with the videos) are distorted, you can correct the size with the 'transform' effect.
For kdenlive have a look on the kdenlive website for pre-compiled packages (http://www.kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/pre-compiled-packages/ubuntu-packages) or compile it using kommander (http://www.kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/builder-wizard).
