So what's the deal? How are you supposed to pronounce "Ubuntu"? Is it first "U" as in "up" and then the rest of the u's are as in "poop"?

And what about "gnome"? I know that GNU is pronounced "genu".

I think it's something like:

Oooboontooo

and

Nome (Gnome) silent G. But that's just how I say it.

That's what I used to think, but then I found this in Wikipedia:

Ubuntu (IPA: /ùbúntú/)

So there's clearly a difference between the first U and the other ones. But what does that mean? I couldn't find a simple "dictionary" for IPA...

Wow I have no idea what that means.

Can someone write a program to fix this!!!!

The best would be if Mark Shuttleworth would just upload an ogg vorbis file saying something like "I pronounce Ubuntu as Ubuntu". ;-)

Nome (Gnome) silent G. But that's just how I say it.

Its actually a hard G. But I agree with the Lug Radio guys that saying it that way is lame. So I don't.

I don't say mac "oh-es-ten" I say "oh-es-ex." It sounds better, I don't care what the real way is. I also call Debian "dee-bee-en" instead of "de-bee-en" because one sounds like a middle class housewife while the other sounds like an almighty god of Linux.

Up until know I thought that it was supposed to be "dee-bee-en".... definitely sounds better anyways.

I end yup saying GNOME as guh'nome, and I incorrectly say Debian as Deebeein.

I'm wondering, though...how do you pronounce Xubuntu? It is zubuntu, eksubuntu, or ksubuntu? I usually say the last one to myself.

the correct prounciation sounds really weird and draws stares.. so i endorse ubuntu as U as in YOU bun as in, well, BUN.. like the ones you eat.. and tu as TO, youbuntoo ubuntu .. a lot easier to say, said the way it looks, and doesnt make people think its a 3rd world system

I pronounce it ħu-bween-toh (the first w is really silent). I know it's probably the wrongest pronounciation on earth, but that's how it would be pronounced if it was in my language.;)

I'd always figured it was ooh-bun-two with the stress on the first syllable. I'd always pronounced Debian as dee-bee-en becaused it sounds much better than deb-ian.

Infoseeker: lol, I like that sound you uploaded.

Ubuntu - oo-bun-too
Debian - deb-ee-un
Gentoo - gentoo with a g as in gun, not as in Gillian
Gibs - jibs

Anything else is just wrong. :p

Ubuntu - three u as in "you" sounds: oobOOntoo
Gnome - technically with a hard G sound: Guh'nome
Debian - e as in "pet": deb-ian
Gentoo - jen two

The TENTH version of the Macintosh Operating System:

NEVER!

Maybe back when it was 10.0. But now on 10.4.x? No way. No "ten." "Ex" sounds hip. "Ten" sounds boing, and OSX is supposed to be the hip system. Also it reminds me too much of the crap OSes called "oh-es-eight" and "oh-es-nine."

I like to abreviate everyting I say; so I pronounce it "mac-ahh-six" :o

So I also call it "ooh-bin-two", because it's faster that way, too. Language should not inconviene.

Wikipedia must have changed the IPA from when the first post was made. Currently it shows:

/u'buntu/

The /u/ is like the /u/ in tube

The ' just means the stress is on the following syllable.

So it would be like ooboontoo for US English.

It's always been pronounced like that. The OP just got it wrong.

How do you pronounce ubuntu? It's in the Ubuntu FAQ:
http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/faq

Also, GNOME is correctly pronounced guh-nome, and it said this on the gnome project homepage for quite some time:
http://library.n0i.net/linux-unix/applications/x/gnome/faq/x104.html

And, for the record, if you go to the Dell Linux Blog (http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/05/01/13147.aspx) there is a video of Shuttleworth in which he mentions Ubuntu many times. His pronunciation falls somewhere in between oo-BOON-too, oo-BIN-too, and oo-BUN-too :)

Also when my friend and I were talking about Ubuntu yesterday, we just kept spelling it out or saying 'the U-word' because neither of us knew how to pronounce it. lol

Cool. And for other languages, if the About thing was translated, most likely the pronunciation was changed to reflect how the letters are pronounced in that language. Here's what it says for French: Ubuntu (prononcé « ou-BOUN-tou »)

:)

I always feel like a loser when i say,

Guh-nome
or
oo-boo-ntoo

I would much prefer to say nome and uh-bun-two but then people always go "omg that is so wrong, you are a noob"

Before last year, I thought
cache was pronounced "ca-ch(like in cheese)"
sql was just "SQL" (not see-quel)
api was just API (not apee)
scsi was just SCSI (not squeezi)
and more

I always dont like to say terms until i hear someone else say them.

scsi is "scuzzy", not "squeezi".
API is appee.
I'd say SQL is more "see-quill" or "see-quol" than "see-quel".

Now, here's a question: cash, or cash-eh? (both are correct)
