I am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop on my compaq Presario CQ60. Installation from DVD hangs with progress bar at about 8% (I think!).
Is there an alternative way of doing this?
Any help/pointer are appreciated.

Did you check the cd for errors? You could try installing using the alternate cd (http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/)and see if you have better success.

I tried also and my installation hangs in the same area. It is not a disk error. I downloaded directly from the net, and double checked it to be sure it was a good file.

I am convinced that it is a hardware issue. For some reason, this version of Ubuntu does not recognize all the hardware on the motherboard of this laptop, and hangs on boot. It is a shame, because this laptop came with vista, and I hate it. I have been using Ubuntu for a year, and wanted to stay with it.

I am hoping that the version upgrade of 9.04 will be better and recognize the chipset on this motherboard properly. I want to get rid of vista as soon as possible. I can hardly wait until it gets out of beta.

You could download and run the Beta as a LiveCD to see if it works.

If it doesn't, and the problem is not listed among the Issues entries, there's a pretty good chance the final version won't work either.
