I have a M$ Windows user for over 10 years. I recently purchased an eee PC 1000H with XP Home pre-installed.The general specs of my 1000H are-

Windows XP Home OS
Intel Atom CPU
1GB RAM
80GB HDD partitioned into C: (40GB FAT32 with 10GB free) and : (40GB FAT32 with 40GB free)
No CD or DVD drive available
4GB USB memory stick available
I would like to give Linux a good try-out on the 1000H yet still be able to use XP until I am satisfied that Linux will be my OS of choice.

In what way can I install Linux (preferably a Ubuntu distribution, as I have been told that it is a good OS) onto my 1000H?

I did try Ubuntu Linux on a new laptop (infected with Vista) about 18 months ago but gave up as I could not locate the necessary drivers.

I recommend not to touch the disk for now.

What you need is this, a computer with CD drive, SD-card reader or USB,
a free SD card or a free USB stick (4 GB or more) and a Ubuntu LiveCD.

After starting the Ubuntu-CD there is a tool (in the menus) to create a
bootable USB stick (which should work with SD cards too).
If the application works for you, what you will get is
a bootable USB stick (or SD card) you can use in your EEE PC.

(I never tested this procedure, what I did in the past ist
to connect an external CD drive, boot Ubuntu and install it
to a SDHC card (and an USB stick), which both work fine.)

Keep in mind that there are special versions (of Ubuntu) that
might work better with a EEE PCs than a out-of-the-box Ubuntu.

As you don't have a cdrom drive, you will need to create a bootable usb thumb drive, This (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/) is a good place to start, as it has instruction for creating a bootable thumb drive in Windows.

Thank you sedawk. I was hoping to be able to get a version of Ubuntu Linux operating without the use of another computer or CD drive. My work involves a lot of travelling throughout Asia and the Pacific, normally to rather remote locations.

Can you suggest some versions of Ubuntu that might work better on the eee PC, bearing in mind the specs of my 1000H?

Thank you Jim. I have looked at your suggestion and found that MiniMe 2008 might work for me because it does not require a CD drive. I'm not sure if it will work on my 1000H however there should be no harm in trying.

I was able to get the MiniMe 2008 operational on my USB memory without having to go and buy an external optical drive. However, MiniMe is not for me (or the eee PC 1000H for that matter).

I have now found eeeBuntu and am going to give that a go - after the 7-hour download is completed. Will report back on the results.

I created a USB memory stick intallation for eeeBuntu NBR 2.0. Run it live for a short time, then decided to install on my HDD in a dual boot configeration with XP. eeeBuntu rocks.

I still have a few minor concerns to address, like use of Chikka, text messaging with video and getting one of my specialist DOS programs operating within Linux. Once those matters are sorted,m I'll be dumping M$ Windows completely.
