Right now I use a free Yahoo email account, primarily because on Windows I always keep Yahoo Messenger open so that I get a notification pop up when I get new email.

My question is, does Evolution Mail also show notifications of new email? I know that the free Yahoo accounts can't be used with Evolution, but what are some other free email accounts that can be used?

I don't mind creating and changing all my online information in order to create a new email account (I've been getting a lot of spam on my Yahoo account lately anyway) as long as it can be used with Evolution and as long as Evolution gives new mail notifications.

Thanks in advance,
~Slacker20

Gmail works perfectly and my evolution lets me know when I have new mail.

Evolution has a plugin (active by default) that tells you that you have new mail in your inbox(es). Works with POP3 accounts as well as IMAP (I use gmail in evolution through IMAP).

You could also use Specto, but it has no plugin for yahoo mail (it does POP3/IMAP/GMail). Make sure to use the newest version, not the one from the repositories.

Im going to throw my hat in for Gmail. AMAZING online experience plus it is easily configured for POP or IMAP access. I HIGHLY recommend Gmail. If you do sign up, feel free to add me as a contact (sirjoebob@gmail.com) and/or shoot me an email if you have any questions.

BTW: Gmail also has integrated chat and excellent search options. Yahoo kinda sucks.

I agree, gmail is a better free e-mail also I prefer Thunderbird over evolution.I have 10 different e-mail accounts and I get all the e-mail accounts through my ISP plus the free accounts from hotmail and gmail.

I would recommend Gmail through the use of POP3 and IMAP.

I use Gmail with web interface. Since they added offline support, clients seem useless to me.

Yeah, but Hotmail's still crap isn't it?

+1 for the Gmail/Evo combo.

Gmail Notifier (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/173)

Firefox addon for gmail and many others I believe, but I haven't tried it.

EDIT#1: Nope, only works for gmail accounts

EDIT#2: There's a firefox addon for yahoo mail called Ymail Notifier (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1252)

I hope it does what you want.

Great, gmail it is then. I already have a gmail account set up, but I've never used it though.

Thanks a lot for the quick feedback.

Oh, and sirjoebob, I love your avatar, that picture is my wallpaper right now. That movie definitely wouldn't have been as good without the joker and Heath Ledger's amazing performance.

Now I have another question.

I'm not sure if this is different between Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 (my laptop, which I use more, has 8.10, and my desktop has 8.04).

Is there a way to make Evolution Mail run in the background? I want to get the notifications of new mail, but not have to have Evolution constantly open and minimized.

A commonly asked question and requested feature, yet the answer is no. At least not through Evolution itself. You can however use another program like Alltray or Kdocker to get the same desired result.

Lame. Thanks for the info though. I suppose on my laptop it won't be as annoying since I use AWN

I know it says last updated in 2007, but, it was actually updated 10/08. Instructions on installing here:

I actually tried that already from www.geocities.com/t_skariah/ypops, and following the instructions exactly, it kept saying it was unable to read the file, so I gave up.

There is a program called gmail-notifier. it is in the repositories and gives you a tray icon that lets you know when you receive an email message, Works pretty good.

No (I'm my humble opinion).

I'll take Hotmail's whitelist over gmail's spam filter any day.

Incomprehensible among the sane. Hotmail lets everything through, Gmail lets almost no spam through.

I've had a Hotmail account since early 1997; it was a lot better pre-Microsoft.

Hotmail's 'exclusive' filter setting acts as a whitelist, which means that no spam makes it to your inbox. That's better than "almost no spam". ;)

Thanks for this post. I was thinking of using a client besides a browser for accessing email. With issues of security also in mind.
