Thought Experiment

I was rerereading a Kuro5hin story about the Win2k source which was leaked in February 2004, and came up with a thought experiment or two for you to mull over.

1. What series of events would take place if Windows were made an opensource project and Microsoft opened up to the public their own form of Bugzilla?

2. What series of events would take place if Microsoft opened up to the general public a bug report system enabling them to contact the developers directly?

Assume an ideal universe without idiots sending spam and rubbish like that.

Seriously, though, I can't imagine Windows becoming open source and freeing their developers from the little hamster's wheels they run in... but it would be funny to see a "NetWindows" "OpenWindows" and "FreeWindows", as well as a "Windebian" "Slackdows", etc. Ubundows, anyone?
