Display Issue

I am new to this whole linux thing but i want to give it a fair chance. The problem that i am having is kind of annoying. I have tried three different distros including Linpus, Fedora and no Ubuntu. The problem I am having is my screen is cut off on my Gateway Mx3228 laptop. Yes it is a wide screen running an S3 Unichrome Pro video card. But like all the stuff on the right i cant see the clock everything is cut off. I tried changing the resolution size from 1600x1200 to 1024x768 to see if that would help and all i get is lines all over my screen and i cant read it any more. This happens on every resolution other then 1600x1200.

I really dont know what to do i have looked but cant find anything any help would be much apperciated because like i said i really want to give Linux a good try.
