after all of my computers were staring to take up to much space, i decided to get a kitchen unit style cupboard, to put my 3 computers , hub, and oter things in.

SO far, i already have an exalt fan on the back of the cupboard. to keep internal temperatures down.

My file server/torrent slave. makes a droning noise, that is being echoed by the cupboard.

Is there any thing that would recommend to stop noise from escaping the cupboard.

i was thinking of lining the inside with polystyrene tiles to help quieten the sound, but i am worried that it way cause a heat build up.

any ways you all can think to help with the sound?

I have a large atlas on top of my myth/file server which kills quite a lot of the vibrations.

You could find the bits that are resonating and stick them down/dampen with blu tack too, that's another good trick.

Other than that the only thing you can do is replace the fans/psus with non droning ones.

When I had a desktop I managed to make it quiet enough that you could only just about hear it. I got a lot of tips from here:

Good luck

Sit them on thick foam rubber, an old hi-fi trick is to use four squash balls as feet.

Suspend the exhaust fan by bungee cord in a hole that's bigger than the fan to mechanically decouple it from the cabinet.

Make sure there is enough ventilation at the front.

The already linked SilentPCreview website is an outstanding resource for info on PC silencing, I don't think there's a better one.

If you have that many computers in one small space you have the keep track of the temperature in the computers there is some temperuature monitors to install. you can put a little bit of soft stuff between the computers it will isolate them but you need a little airflow depending on how you have the fans.

Do you know what component is the source of that noise? The main culprits would be the fans on the CPU, case and PSU. Also watch for wires or other components fouling the fans.

Good quality quiet fans aren't expensive, and as an added bonus will probably cool better than the stock ones.

You will have to look at something else to dampen vibration. The above sites do list anti-vibration feet etc.

Polystyrene can get really squeaky.
