I have a XP machine and a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu machine. Last night I set up a home network between the XP and Vista machine and this morning when I booted into the Ubuntu partition I was no longer able to connect to the internet. I can ping my router and the XP machine, I can also see the shared folders on the xp machine, but I can't ping any beyond the router (meaning that I can't browse using firefox either).

Here's some potentially useful output:

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Edit:

Actually I'm seeing a lot of people who have had problems with their wired connection after updating to the -11 kernel. I also updated shortly before having these problems and maybe I'm attributing the problem to the wrong this. Although, most people who are reporting problems seem to be on Acer machines. Mine is on an Asus motherboard. Going back to the -9 kernel doesn't fix the problem, however.

Never used pppoeconf before. I thought it was for DSL connections, I have cable internet. Am I missing something?

I simply plugged my ethernet cable into the router. Has worked for the past 4 years that I've had the router......

I did get internet working again, but how I did it doesn't make much sense. I simply unplugged the router and plugged it back in again. Now I would assume this would simply renew my dhcp and ip address for both my ubuntu machine and the xp machine, but why didn't renewing my dhcp from the command line accomplish the same thing? I've since experimented and realized that if I connect ubuntu to the router first, then the xp machine everything is ok. If I connect the xp machine and then ubuntu, I can only access the internet from the xp machine (ubuntu can see the router and the local network, but not the internet). Any ideas as to why this is so?
