Some background...I am a systems admin, mostly MS stuff, so even though I am a noob to Linux and pretty much a virgin to Ubuntu, I am not totallyan idiot! Have checked out Knoppix and have done a Red Hat install, but years ago.

Spent most of a slow workday yesterday attempting to install Ubuntu to a project computer to test it out. It's an AMD, 750 Hz, fairly old, nothing special, but worked just fine with XP on it. Spent hours trying to figure out the 'busybox' and the 'initramfs' problems. Finally decided to check out the check sums. Well what the heck...they didn't match. Downloaded it twice more (another 8.1 and an 8.04)from different mirrors.:( The checksums in both of these didn't match either! Crap....downloaded it with a torrent....THAT one didn't match either!

My work network: on fiber, IMMENSE speed and bandwith. What gives? I have downloaded a gazillion programs up to the new Windows 7 (and not using torrent, either) and have absolutely NO problems with these. I figure that I need to figure this out before I go any further, but from what I have read, that will just be the first of my problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions, other than "give it up?"

Thanks!

Don't give up, it is worth the effort:)

Is the byte count for the files you have downloaded larger than the source file? If so maybe some kind of file padding is taking place with the download.

Perhaps try downloading from a different server nearer to your geographical position. I have downloaded each version of ubuntu since 5.04, some via http, some using one or other torrent client, and have never had a single problem with a bad iso. I have used either the normal Ubuntu download server linked to from ubuntu.com, or a local one here in UK.
