When I leave my computer alone for more than about half ah hour (sometimes less) my shutdown options in the right hand corner dissapear, a problem I thought I had fixed by reinstalling the menu however it happened again and this time reinstalling the menu had no effect. Also my desktop environment starts to float up and to the left leaving the rest of the screen black. When I move my mouse around the desktop follows the mouse as if it were heavily zoomed in on something. Please help as these problems are driving me insane and causing me to restart every time I try to use the machine.

you could try setting the computer to suspend when inactive for 15 minutes or so.

How do I set it to suspend?

system>preferences>power management
"put computer to sleep when inactive for..."
set whatever time you want there.

It would probably be better to disable any power saving OR screen saver options. It sounds like your driver is crashing when trying to launch the screensaver or turn off the monitor.
