View Full Version : Blog About Linux Eye Candy

Recently I was asked if I had a blog that covered the many hours I spend playing with Linux's many forms of eye candy. I have always been against blogging because I am not important enough for one (especially with eye candy because I'm not a developer), but after thinking about it I decided that a blog would allow me to give links to the neat stuff I find on the internet related to eye candy and would create another place to discuss whats going on in that scene.

Here is my blog on the subject:

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Poofyhairguy%27s_Eye_Candy_Report

I put it on the docs site for a reason- I want anyone with relevent information, personal accounts, or ideas for future stuff to play with to get on there and add these things to the end of the entry. I hate blog sites where you have to sign up (to a worthless blog site) to make a single comment- many of you already have accounts at the doc site as it is (or you should- its a great resource).

So read if you want, but more importantly add when you can. I think that many in the Ubuntu community like eye candy but our only links are a few random forums guides. Please note that I am just a user like you- I don't push the platform, I test it! But I hope that I can maybe point out some things some of you all might have missed and that you all can point some eye candy stuff to me to try!

Blog isnt about beeing important, i blog for myself, i always read my blog, and somethimes i wanna see some link, or something that i posted on my blog.

But the thing that i like most in my blog is that after an year, you can laugh about how stupid things you did in the past..

I had an old blog, i remembered about it some days ago, and i laughed a lot reading it.. so i decided to start another one.. take a look at my sign

When I read over that the thing that really caught my eye is the experimental minimize effect!

I saw that....I thought that it was interesting. I mean....it IS hard to find stuff on the Xgl. Just a few screenshots and the last release that is Dapper's repos....

some blog to provide backups on their thoughts and ideas - it isn't that blogging makes you important or that you have to be important to start blogging

Ok...I added a HUGE post on the blog today. I talk about the death of Xcompmgr (and why it does not matter really), the flamefest over Xgl, the newest Xorg 7 release, and (most of it) the alternatives to Apple's Expose in Linux.

Read here as always:

Yeah. Right now a lot of eye candy things are happening.

Later it will probably be just my advice and reviews of new effects and tricks.

I tried to install Gnome on top of Kubuntu to try out some of your eye candy tips. For some reason Gnome just did not like that so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu just for that very reason. I seem to have better luck adding KDE to Ubuntu than vice versa.

Awesome.

But I think its funny that anyone would move to the lessor eye candy DE because of me. The compositor is KDE is a least one year ahead on what Gnome has.

That said I prefer Gnome (I'm all about the total visual experiance, and I have not found a KDE theme I like- I LOVE my Industrial) so I use it for my tricks. But I am not a zealot.

In the future I have many plans for the blog that include KDE. As soon as I run out of current ideas (aka the news clears up a little) I plan to have an entry that is completely about eye candy in KDE. I have been working on it for a while now (aka "you think my current posts are big....just wait").

And eventually I will do the same for Enlightenment.

Two big updates to my blog. One is why I think that ATI and Nvidia do not release open source drivers. Second is all about the newest way to enjoy composite, dashboard widgets in Gnome, info about the new gdesklets release and the best Firefox extension ever.

Find the newest stuff on blogspot:

I will catch up the doc blog tomorrow.

This one is about compiz, XGL, the Metacity compositor, and the leaving of “The Great” Daniel Stone.

Update about Compiz and XGL and the problems it solves (very many that are very interesting) and the fact that Dapper seems to have dropped Cairo themes.

I just recently created a tech blog surrounding patent law, tech rights, intellectual property rights ,etc..

More of a reposting of new articles that i find on forums, digg, slashdot, zdnet, and various other news sites's tech sections (BBC, google, cnn, abc, etc..). (see the sig)

Just my opinion.. but people like pictures.. it breaks up the monotiny of endless text. Nice blog by the way.. i've tried out most of the stuff you've posted about here (desktop waves, 3ddesktop, composite effects). All quality stuff :)

yeah poofy! I'm excitedly (I'm not as patient as mstlyevil) awaiting your new inputs on what's new.

Have you tried the Kororaa LiveCD? Maybe you could do a review on that.
How about an update on XGL status in Dapper?
Is there a possibility of you doing/testing eye-candy stuff on KDE? or do you know of a blog similar to yours that does KDE eye-candy stuff?

Sorry for the questions. You are my eye-kandy idol, king, and god! :D

EDIT: OMG! I can't believe I actually typed eye-kandy?!?! (I'll leave that as it is :D)
