I have Dapper on a Acer travelmate laptop.

It worked fine for over a year using a pc-card wifi card (dapper doesnt support the acer network or wifi cards)... until the pc-card stopped working.

The CD drive has also failed.

I'd like to upgrade to the latest ubuntu because it does have drivers for the acer inbuild wifi cards, but I cant seem to install it on top.

I cant install from CD, and I cant "upgrade" or "install" from the internet. I've tried downloading the 8.10 iso file and installing from USB stick, but 2 sticks I've tried havent booted successfully. I used cd2usb tool from another computer with vista to create the boot stick.

Is there any other option? I can transfer files (via usb stick) and possible install from the harddrive if thats possible. Anyone know how ?

Better idea would be to do it LTS to LTS; Dapper to Hardy first. Later you can attempt to 8.10. (I'd stay płt in Hardy LTS; more stable longer support)

But how do I upgrade to hardy without network connection, CD drive, or bootable USB stick ?
