I have the same problem. I upgraded yesterday from 8.04 to 8.10. For some reason the grub did not update itself so I had to boot the older kernel (the menu had stayed the same.) I ran update-grub, looked at the resulting file, which looked good. Then I ran grub-install.
Now when I reboot, I see the updated menu, but each of the menu entries gives Error 15, file not found. However, if I use the liveCD to boot, and select the option boot from first HD, then I see the updated menu and I can successfully select the new kernel and it boots. !? I have tried this sequence a few times now, and it mystifies me.
Any ideas what to do now? thanks for any help.
I followed the instructions on this thread and ran the boot info script.
Here are the results of the boot script.
