Failed Installation

I installed ubuntu on my Compaq and when i turn it on it goes to the splash screen and then a black screen. Ubuntu has never worked on that computer. I have also tried to reinstall it and it didnt work.

it might help

if u starting safe mode and in the root shell type
#> startx

what is the result ?
