if linux ever becomes mainstream how will I ever get the nerdy feeling of using a non-mainstream kernel? I can't stomach the thought that I'd ever have to use hurd:(

Perhaps they have different sources.
For example, that site may be giving you the statistics of users visiting their site.

Of course more web developers are likely to run Linux than the general population. I guarantee you that the figure for desktops is closer to 1% than 4%.

That's a bit off, as Windows is now at 87%, Mac OS X at 9.5%, and Linux at .6%...

Linux has a 50% market share in my home! 75% if you count the DVR and the TV!
