So I'm thinking about a total hardware upgrade in a little while. I really like the install I have right now, everything works the way I want, I just want some more power. I'm satisfied with my primary hard drive. I have separate / and /home partitions on it, /swap is on a second drive.

What steps could I take to simply transplant my current hard drive configuration into a new system? New mobo, video, sound and various peripherals (same mouse/keyboard/monitor).

Would it "just work" or would it be helpful to boot into recovery mode and do some form of dpkg --reconfigure -a to set up all the packages again on my system?

I would be staying with a 64-bit AMD processor, that much I know for sure, although it would be a new socket set, probably multi-core, right now it's a single core.
