I don't use any panels per se. I usually have the dwm status bar hidden, but show it with Alt-B when needed. So maybe I should vote 0.25 panels...?

I prefer 2, but I can live with one, or just a half if I am running Openbox. So I guess it would be 2. And where is the poll?

Right now, on Windows: 1.

i forgot to add a poll. i love the flexibility of ubuntu but i am finding it hard to adjust to 2 panels but one seems too unorganized

Well, I have two on my screen, but I never use them. I loves me some hotkeys.

Edit: And Alt+F2

I like 2 but depending on screen resolution I keep them hidden

One panel on the right hand side of a 24" screen suits me fine.

It is set to expand dynamically with icons that have the ability to use its tray as well as the icons of all running app's. I could probably kill one of these abilities as I can usually see what is going on in multiple desktop display.

1, I don't see the need for two. And in KDE, it just looks right.
But when I use GNOME I usually use two, I have no idea why.

One shelf (enlightenment panel) here, though I am trying to get used to using itask-ng instead of the normal shelf I have been using because it saves screen space.

I currently have four:
102067

I would prefer to have just the two, but my icons and menus get mixed up when a fullscreen app changes the resolution - so I split the top panel into three.

No panels.
They are a waste of space.

I use one, but I also use AWN so it isn't so bad :/

I use none unless I'm on openbox or using global menu. Global menu saves more space in the end so I ususally end up with that.

I use openbox / gmrun.

There is absolutely no need for a panel.
Ctrl-menu gives me all my running apps.

Two. They may take up screen real estate, but my monitors are large with plenty of real estate to spare.

I didn't like that GNOME used two panels at first. But now I've gotten use to it and I think actually prefer having two. Plus my resolution is set at 1600x1200, so it's not like they're taking up that much space in the grand scheme of things.

2 or
1 at the top + cairo-dock

2 panels. If I had only one, I wouldn't have enough room for the task manager.

In Gnome, I used to have the window list and system tray at the top, and just the menu and launchers at the bottom (a la XFCE), but over the past few months, I've switched to one single panel at the bottom.

I prefer zero. Leaves more space for apps and also gets rid of distracting clutter... :)

1panel and 1 dock :D

One, at the top. Used no panels in Openbox for a few months, but then I got tired of it being entirely keyboard driven (I still mostly use the keyboard, but I like to use the mouse every now and then), and that I couldn't see the time when I maximized windows.

One tiny pypanel (maybe 20px high), I tried no panels for a while but using the keyboard while laying in bed gets old pretty quick.

I use 2 panels although the one on top is half the size of the one at the bottom. My bottom panel takes up the whole lower half of the screen.

two panels, one on top and one on the right side of the screen.

2 of them, one top, one bottom and use them both!

I'm using KDE 4.2 atm, so just 1.

On Gnome I use 2.

Most often two, but currently one.

I prefer a one panel whether I am using GNOME, KDE or XFCE.

One. If you're using a dock like AWN or Cairo Dock, then having another panel makes no sense. So I have one at the top for the menus and some system info. I know I oculd put it all in the dock, but it gets really cluttered, and I like to use the dock strictly for launching apps.

I have one of those:

On gnome, computer: 1 panel + awn
on gnome, laptop : 1 panel on top
on Awesome both computers : no panel... of course ^^
on kde, computer : 1 panel....
on flux.... ok this is getting silly

Gnome on my netbook and desktop: I use the layout from Ubuntu Netbook Remix. The desktop doesn't run the netbook launcher. So, one thin panel at the top.

On KDE, I use the default setting which is one thick panel at the bottom.

On Openbox, I use no panels at all.

I have 1, with AWN down the bottom.
