i feel that we need a dictionary lesson first because of the following link

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone

Support
the ability to use all the features of a device.

Iphone
sold by AT&T in the US as a smart phone. (I'm not talking about ipod)

Let me start with saying that I have an ipod for music I have the iphone because I wanted a smart phone.

what we need to do:

_1. ability to download and upload data from device.
_____a. usb preferred, wifi ok
_2. once we have the data from the iphone the data needs to merge with our computers software
_____a. emails to Evolution, thunderbird, ...
_____b. calender events to Evolution ....
_____c. files to ~/sync (all files .doc, .exe, .mp3)(user may change)
_____d. as a plus i want to be able to back up my iphone 3rd party apps. (super monkey ball, CastCatcher...)
_3. send iphone our contacts, email, files, and if requested the stored 3rd party apps
_4. when done user must be able to make a phone calls
_5. every attempt needs to made to leave the iphone as is.

lets work together to fix this problem. helpful posts only please.

That's a very good proposal and I'd be extremely happy if I could ditch iTunes altogether. Maybe some time in the distant future... ;)
