OK, I was trying to install 'dvdrip' from under Synaptic Package Manager from a fresh Ubuntu 8.10 install, and it doesn't appear when doing a search. However, doing "sudo apt-get install dvdrip" from a terminal works fine, and the program is in the list if I select "All" and scroll down. Can anyone shed any light on why the search isn't working?
Cheers! :)

The search works fine, but you must specify that you want to include the package name.
(The search box includes a drop-down menu)

I am also having this problem. The whole app directory is sometimes empty too. I can do a search and see an app, if lucky, but if I navigate away and do another search, it will be gone when I go back or search again.
When I do a reload, most of the downloads fail or come back as 0 bytes.
FIXED:
You have to make sure the Quick Search box is empty when doing a search.
