I'm looking for a lightweight dock that doesn't require Compiz...any ideas?

I use Gnome-Do with Docky and love it, but I'll be the first to admit it's on the heavy side.

thanks for letting me know. i do have a rather beastly system.

so it doesnt really help for the lightweight question! but still cool...

"Docky" is great, but it requires Compiz-Fusion or some other compositing WM, so it doesn't meet the OP's requirements.

I see in your sig that your computers should be more than able to use the metacity or kwin composite features (and compiz too :p).

Then you can use any dock you want without using Compiz Fusion.

Noted.

;) sorry bout the suggestion. thanks for righting me.

I believe also there is a Gnome panel applet that kind of gives the "Windows 7" icon task look. not really a dock but perhaps for non compositioned desktops?

its on gnome-look somewhere i believe...

You can run AWN without compiz this way:

Works great on my PC

Wbar looks nice, but it's just a launcher. I think the term "dock" usually refers to something like OS X Dock or Avant Window Navigator, which are task managers as well as launchers.

The only launcher/task manager I'm aware of that doesn't require compositing is kooldock. At this point it's kind of an abandoned project, but there is a version with a couple of improvements over the one in the repos at kde-apps.org.
