After update to ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04 an e-sata disk is causing me not to be able to boot when it is turned on

I have 3 possible kernels to boot from: the oldest 2.6.24-23 gives the error ata1 softreset and im able to boot
but there are some problems with the nvidiadrivers and i can only use low graphics mode

The other 2 kernels are 2.6.27-9 and 2.6.27-11 and they give the error message: "link online but device missclassified, retrying."

After this it keeps going and stops on "uniform CD-ROM driver.
when i disconnect the disk its booting as normal, but i have problems mounting the disk manually.
Any thoughts on what has happened or how i can fix the problem is greatly appreciated

PS. sorry for typo on heading
