problem with gstreamer

after installing pkg's for ape decoding i get this msg when i open mplayer:

Failed to create a GStreamer play object. Please check your GStreamer installation.

I'm about as clueless as you are. But still, why don't you try using Synaptic to uninstall and reinstall all gstreamer packages and see if things change. Plus I think it'll help people if you mention what flavor of ubuntu you're using and stuff...

also if doing an uninstall, remember to delete .gstreamer folder & contents from /HOME, an uninstall wont remove it!
