Microphone won't unmute

Hi

I have recently joined the Ubuntu community and got myself the spanking new Interpid(so therefore a newby to Linux). I can't seem to unmute the mic even after hours of reading, nothing seems to work for me. Please help if you can.

I have same problem on msi wind. Mic was working not too long ago. Now I can't record or use skype. Mic unmutes in volume control but after closing the window and reopening, it is again muted. Tried running alsamixer too.

I unmute the mic, keep the Volume Control window open and start Skype.
It will not mute if you keep Volume Control window open.
