View Full Version : The joy of learning Linux

My wife has an old PPC that I have been trying to get her to put any Linux based OS on for a while now. She finally gave in and decided if she was going to put a distro on it she had to have Ubuntu. So I told her she would have to install it herself. (Puting Ubuntu on a PPC is a pain.) She said that was fine thinking it would be easy, having seen me install Ubuntu on many a machine. To make a long story short, 5 hours later she finally has it up and has even registered here on the forums (I helped her with basic stuff but told her she would have to come here for the hard stuff so she would know where to go if I was not home). She wanted to use my ID, but I told her no. Now, after all that work she is an Ubuntu user. I told her to give up 3 hours in, she refused and kept at it. I am very proud of her. I really think it is the work and the feeling of satisfaction when you get it right that draws you in and keeps you here. That is (IMHO) the joy of learning Linux.

5 hours?

Yeah, it sucked. It would not find the cd rom drive it was running from. She found the fix here on the forums, but she had to keep playing with it to get it to work. She mixed the answers from 2 different threads on the same topic (different answers) to get it right. She restarted every time it didn't work. When she finally got it right, she had picked the wrong keyboard set up and couldn't remember what she did to get it to work so she had to start over. During the time she also re-downloaded and re-burnt the cd, just in case. It was her first time and it was not the standard "put in the live cd and install".

Great post. For me, one of the joys in learning Linux is in fixing something broken, or resolving that which appears to be impossible to solve.

Yeah, I was hoping she would post here too. I also asked her to post how she did finally got it loaded to both help someone else and as a reminder in case she ever needs to re-install. I don't think she is going to "hang out" in the forum like I do, but I'll have to keep bugging her about it :)
