View Full Version : [ubuntu] xp/win7/ubuntu 8.10 multi boot issue

I've been looking thru the posts here and haven't seen one particular to my issue.

I have 2 - 1 terabyte drives in my system. I have been dual booting into xp and windows 7 beta since the win7 was publicly available. I made 4 partitions on the first disk drive, a 50 gig for xp OS, 50 gig for win7 OS, and split the rest into 2 other partitions, one for programs, other for downloads, music, video, etc. With the win7 bootloader, whichever windows os I selected to boot from, it would make that the c drive, the other os the d drive, and arrange the others as it saw fit. Using the nifty feature in windows to rename drives/partitions, I let windows manage the c and d switching, and I renamed the others to be consistant with each of the 2 OS's.

The second drive was mostly sitting there, I split it into 2 partitions, one had more music and videos, the other empty.

I decided to install ubuntu 8.10. I was going to replace the win7 with ubuntu, but wanted more space than the 50 gigs set aside for the win7 os partition. So I installed ubuntu on the last partition of the second drive, with like 450 gigs free or so. I made a separate / partition, a separate /home partition, and a separate /swap partition, all formatted with ext3.

All is well with the ubuntu installation. I get the grub loader with the choice of ubuntu or windows vista/longhorn (as it named itself), no xp listed. I figured that would be under the vista loader.

Ubuntu loads and runs fine. Here's the problem. When I select the Vista loader, it comes back with an error 29, diskwrite error, and won't load anything windows, just hit enter to return to grub loader screen.

I NEED to get back into xp, unfortunately I have a few programs I use to work from home that ONLY work with 32 bit xp. Hopefully just a bit of tweaking to the loader or something can get me loading windows again??

I'd hate to have to reinstall xp, it's not a hassle, but reinstalling all the programs I need again gets old, plus that'll probably break the grub loader and I'd lose ubuntu too?? Don't really care about the win7, and since I did just install ubuntu, could always do that again as well. Sure would be nice to have the tri-boot like it's supposed to though...

Any and all help will be greatfully appreciated.... thanks....

You can boot any of them with Super Grub.
For the time being; post:

sudo fdisk -lu

How about opening your menu.lst:

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
And change your Windows entry to:

title Windows XP/Vista
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
In other words, I would recommend getting rid of the "savedefault" line, because that may be why you are getting a Grub error 29. Let me know if that works or not.

removing the savedefault line did it! It now will let me load both crappy versions of *******!!!

I really wish I could get off the ******* teat, but as mentioned earlier, a couple programs I need to use for work are 32 bit xp only, won't work with 64 bit anything, and no linux either.

Plus I do have a gaming jones goin... can't do the lotro, guitar hero, deadspace kinda things on the linux... as far as I know.... yet....

Thanks caljohnsmith!! and also Pumalite for the assistance..... I can use the ******* for work, and gaming, and the ubuntu for the rest... soon as I can figure out why totem tells me it can't access my resources when I put in a dvd or cd, but thats for a different post if I can't figure it out....
