I am running the following:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS
Release: 6.06
Codename: dapper

A couple of source packages are not compiling properly, so that plus just having the system getting long in the tooth, I know it needs to be upgraded

Question is, what is the most reliable upgrade path?

Aptitude? 6.06 to 8.04? Or straight to 8.10 possible? Advisable?

There are several paths here, but am asking, what would be a successful and recommended upgrade scenario from 6.06 LTS? And yes... I have backups galore in case the wheels come up, which never do right?

Tx for any advice...

Upgrading 6.06 lts to 8.04 lts would be the way to go if you don't want to do a clean install.

Excellent. Thanks for the answer.

So, how? I see posts scattered around, with ranging dates. Is there a definitive or authoritative tutorial somewhere?

Tx muchly. Appreciate the direct pointer to an upgrade path. Hopefully this will work and I won't have to go chasing a mess of fixes if the upgrade goes badly. Like that has never happened before... will hope for the best....

Me too. I have had my share of rescue missions... this is important as am needing to add a couple of applications and they appear to not be compiling properly as am getting seg faults after a time with them. So figure upgrading into newer compilers and so on might resolve this...

tx for your response. Will letcha know...
