I read somewhere that one can buy a laptop that will run Ubuntu like a champ for around 400-500 USD. I'd like to know which laptops are best for this.... (I would like to avoid netbooks....)

Thanks

I think one of the Toshiba Satellite laptops that I bought for my aunt last year was about 500-600 dollars. It was pretty good (never tried Linux on it though).
You can always go to your local computer store and browse yourself since prices do tend to vary.

I would go with HP, they got great Linux support. I have had bad luck with Toshiba. If you get an HP though, you don't have to accept the Windows license. Just decline it and get your money back for it, then install Ubuntu. Should offset the cost a bit. :)

Dell Ubuntu maybe? http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/linux_3x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

I have no personal experience with it but the price seems right.

For another $200 a System76 would be much more updated. http://system76.com/index.php?cPath=28

There is a System76 board on this forum and I've seen nothing but good things about them there. http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=341

I recommend Dell for powerful, cheap notebooks. Just google "dell coupon codes" for some up-to-date codes... a couple years ago I saved $100, got free shipping, and got a free year of support (I didn't want it, but hey, it's free). I think it cost me $400 in all. It's quite a powerful machine.
