hello ubupeople, i am planning to replace my old trusty athlon xp, i've taken a look around on the web for a new mobo-ram-cpu combo but the offering is daunting to say the least, I seem to understand the most recent motherboards come with all the basic multimedia stuff i.e. basic video and audio plus sata controllers and so on... needless to say I want them to be reasonably linux friendly, unless im mistaken intel provides open source drivers for most of its hardware, hence a intel-based system might be a likely candidate... on the other hand amd-based solutions seem to sport higher quality/price ratio all round but I'd rather stay away from ati because of its crappy linux drivers... anybody got some advice? I don't need anything fancy, bear in mind im on a tight budget (<400€), all i need is raw computing power for scientific applications, passive cooling would be a plus, any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance! andre

I recently purchased a Biostar board (MCP6P-M2+) with AMD Sempron 3400+ processor. Paid only $64 USD. The memory was extra. It loads Ubuntu without problems. My main system also uses a Biostar board TF560 A2+ with AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor. The chipsets in both are AMD and work fine. Ubuntu loads all drivers without problem.

If you are into ordering look at www.microcenter.com (http://www.microcenter.com) or www.tigerdirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com) for combo setups. I am sure you also have more regional sources to use.

These are what work for me. Hope it helps.
