I've personally switched over the Jabber, I've been meaning to do so for quite a while.

In true Ubuntu spirit, I've set up a Jabber server which I'm allowing anyone to use. You should be able to register with pretty much any Jabber client out there, I'd recommend Pidgin or Gajim.

Server: jfunction.co.uk

In an effort to help people wanted to switch over, I've compiled a short list of resources.

- List of Jabber Clients (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_XMPP_client_software)
- About Jabber / XMPP (http://www.jabber.org/web/Philosophy_overview)
- How to create a new Jabber account (http://www.jabber.org/web/Quickstart)

Again, feel free to use my server if you're just getting started. It was an interesting learning experience setting it up, and I'm glad I have done so. When you're done, add me 'divineomega@jfunction.co.uk'. :D

Update: I forgot to add a recommendation for an awesome online web-based Jabber client I recently discovered at www.meebo.com. It might be a great way to chat if you're on a network which blocks the XMPP protocol port.

This good news. Good to see you've got all the transports working too. You do have a self-signed SSL certificate though. You can get a proper one free from here:

What's wrong with a self signed certificate? It still provides encryption from client to server.
