I just made a claean install of 8.04 on my acer laptop, anad left an unpartitioned space for a n xp install. But when I try to install xp, it claims that there is no harddisc installed. Can anyone tell me how to get the installer to recognice the free space on my hd?

Found this

Never tried it so at your own risk. Normally XP is installed first much easier.

Is this a SATA hard drive you're talking about? If so, and if your XP install disc is pre-Service Pack 1 (meaning SP-1 has not been included on the CD), you're going to run into issues with XP not recognizing a SATA hard drive. It wasn't until SP-1 that SATA drivers became native to Windows XP.

If windows is installed first it is MUCH EASIER.
