I changed my default media player in preferred applications and confirmed with control alt backspace. Did this activate something I didnt want.?
My system seems slower.

You shouldn't have to "confirm" something like that. It should work without any kind of restarting. If something seems off with your system, give it a full reboot. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace performs what is often called a "Soft reboot", which doesn't shut down everything that is running. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace also doesn't work perfectly on every system, like mine.

Tell me how it is after the full reboot.

It's not a "soft reboot", as it doesn't reboot anything. It restarts Xserver.

I stand corrected. It is apparently a term of art that I've applied too widely in this case. My advice is still good, though.

It is a normal and essential part of every Ubuntu system. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace just restarts it. Just try rebooting your computer and see how your computer works then.
