and this really caught my eye

"It is tough to compete with “free”
Not that Microsoft got off easy. Their 5,000 man layoff is a direct result of the cost of competing with Linux - their client business revenue slid $335 million.

Ballmer’s layoffs mean this is no one-time blip. Linux has changed the competitive landscape in a way Apple never could - after all Mac OS costs twice as much as Windows. And this is "just a taste: the economics going forward are brutal.

This is not right.
So many years of making so many millions , they just fired that many people??? well, I guess if some of them were programmers, windows is just going to get more malware developers.

Sorry, Leopard costs $129. Windows is $199, $239, $299 and $319 for full versions. They are $99, $129, $199, $219 for upgardes.

That whole article was funny....

It was like saying Linux is dead lol...

Wow... someone is a Windows Fan.

If Linux is Dead then someone better fix my eyes and my computer because I am dual booting windows xp and Linux mint 6 just fine <.<.

Anyways I think Linux is doing just fine and always will :).

I think his reasoning is flawed, but there you go.

My eyes are worse. I'm triple-booting Ubuntu, Arch, and (kinda*) LFS.

*I booted it once, just now when I completed building it and setting it up. It threw a kernel panic.

Interesting article. Especially the bit about Win7 having to potentially be given to OEMs for free just to remain competitive on netbooks. That could be an interesting change of business model for MS: the basic OS is gratis but they recoup their losses through the, "Live", software store.

Of course, the layoffs (http://www.bls.gov/MLS/) have nothing to do with the massive economic downturn (http://www.savagechickens.com/images/chickeneconomy.jpg).

Yeah, it's so bad they might have to give up their 450' yacht.

Uhmm this has to do with his vision of macs being more pricey then windows how?

I am just curious >.>.

You were talking about his 'reasoning being flawed', in one respect. dmizer elaborated upon another aspect of his reasoning that could be construed as, "flawed".

I personally agree. His links do make some attempt to refute this argument, however:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1835

“The decline in OEM revenue reflects an 11 percentage point decrease in the OEM premium mix to 64%, primarily driven by growth of licenses related to sales of netbook PCs, as well as changes in the geographic and product mixes. Revenue from commercial and retail licensing of Windows operating systems increased $113 million or 19%. Based on our estimates, total worldwide PC shipments from all sources was approximately flat, driven by increased demand in emerging markets, offset by decreased demand in mature markets.”
From Microsoft's 10-Q.

If you look at the comments to the article, the entire thing, as is every article like this, is one massive flamebait. Waste of time and energy, and a waste of 5 minutes of my life.

well there's five minutes of my life i wont be getting back.
not only was the story not backed up with a single reference, but the authors command of the english language shows little to be desired over his intelligence.

that article pretty much numbed my brain.
