im trying to make my swap larger, so i want to make a swap file. if i make a swap file, will that be used instead of my swap partition or in addition to it?

Swap is something that should be used only to a minimal extent. I've got a 2GB swap file, which is overkill (I've got a ton of things running, including about 10 torrents, and less than 5MB of swap is used). If you're hitting swap so much that you want to increase it's size, I'd say that your system doesn't have enough RAM.

A quick and cheap RAM upgrade (a GB costs less than $20 where I live) would be a far better idea than an increase in swap space.

If you don't remove the existing swap space the swap file will be used in addition to the existing swap space.

I agree with the other poster that RAM is cheap and you'll get better performance that way. :)
