this is very strange:

whenever I press the "a" key in gnome-terminal or any of its child windows -- eg, gedit if started from gnome-terminal -- another gnome-terminal window opens up. it doesn't seem to happen in other windows -- never in Dosemu, never in xterm.

anyone ever hear of something like this? I'm using Intrepid in a little Asus eeePC with a kernel (AdamM's) customized for it, plus I've got Cairo-dock and compiz, so be surprised if it's caused by compiz, however doing away with most of compiz' stuff hasn't changed anything.

for the time being I've switched to xterm.

see if "a" is specified in the keyboard shortcuts
Edit > Keyboard shortcuts

sounds like it's mapped to file > new window

The default shortcut for a new window (so you can change it back) is shift+ctrl+N

yeah, I thought to check that -- I went through the whole Shortcuts menu, but there's nothing there (I also haven't got a "new window" entry) -- plus it only happens in gnome-terminal.

I am having other issues -- I think compiz-related -- seem to be losing my desktops, one by one...
