Hi,

I was unable to get my Epson 3490 scanner to work under Hardy Heron (despite several noble attempts at help from these forums), so I'm interested in buying a new scanner that will work without having to install Windows firmware files, etc. What makes/models will work out of the box? Recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you interested in a stand-alone scanner or a multi-function printer that does everything? I have a MFC that has a scanner that works perfect(HP5180). HP is well known for their open-source support. Same with Brother, though I have never used the latter.

HP is pretty much the best one you can find that has linux support.

Thanks for replying.

I'm interested in a stand-alone scanner.

I found this article doing a quick search of the forums. Probably worth a look. http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html

Try the instructions posted by rbmorse, before you invest in a new scanner .... it worked for my epson perfection 4490, and should work for the 3490 also (See moschops post) :-

I have a canon Lide 25. It's cheap and you just need to plug it in. It is missing the more advanced features which you may need though.
