making a usb startup disk

it says i can make a linux on usb by making a starup disk but does it format my memory stick?

it will format the amount you allocate for it. e.g. 2 gb in a 4 gb pendrive. the rest should remain untouched

coz i was looking for a way like unetbootin as it doesn't work, when i click default, only the wallpaper comes up and thats it
